In 2013, artist Alex Brannin created this mural for Better Block at the encouragement of Alchemy NFK. This first activation of Norfolk’s fledgling arts district was a temporary urban intervention aimed at revitalizing underused spaces through public art, community gathering, and walkable design. Brannin’s mural, on the repurposed billboard of the former Zedd’s Auction House, served as a focal point for the event.
After Better Block, Alex’s design was painted over by Wallace Berkley Gibs III, aka BERK, a Portsmouth graffiti artist.

Hampton Roads: The Canvas was the definition of a grassroots effort, pre-NEON District. A group of like-minded individuals saw a need in Norfolk. They rallied support, organized around a derelict building, even secured small monetary contributions from the public to purchase paint materials.
