A Hop, Skip and a Jump

Magazine Lane
MAGAZINE LANE, NORFOLK, VA 23510

Sophia Wood

2025

The sixth iteration of the alley “rug” was painted by Sophia Wood with help from her fellow classmates at The Governor’s School for the Arts. The rotating art site in Magazine Lane, between 801 Granby and Hurrah’s Copeland Center is a popular selfie spot in NEON.

Sophia’s hopscotch design subtly exposes the process of breaking down barriers in order to create something new. The first step is starting, then it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump away. As viewers hop along, they can see nods to each of the previous alley rug’s designs, going back to 2015.
