Blue Moon is a large-scale street mural created with the intention of translating the spirit and process of artist Andy Harris’ collage work into a public, painted form. Living in a coastal region, he is surrounded by nautical imagery that often adheres to familiar visual conventions. With this mural, Andy chose to challenge those norms by introducing a high horizon line and emphasizing motion through unorthodox tools like sponges, drywall taping knives, and other materials not typically associated with mural painting.
These tools allowed Andy to build up gestural, textural marks that echo the layered, tactile nature of collage. He worked with a combination of exterior house paint and spray paint, materials that mirror the hybrid media approach he uses in studio practice. Blue Moon is both a nod to the coastal environment and a departure from its expected imagery, offering a more intuitive and process-driven interpretation of place.
